Question: Why do South Africans kiss each other on the lips?

Many world travellers say that South Africa is the only place where they have noticed that people who are not married or romantically involved give each other quick pecks on the lips as a form of greeting. Friends do it, relatives do it, little kids do it, whites do it, blacks do it, coloureds do it.

What does a kiss on the lips symbolize?

Kiss on the lips: implies passion, may mean “I love you” or “I want to date you.” If it is carried out very quickly, just barely touching one anothers lips, it may mean simply friendship. Kiss accompanied by an embrace: when both bodies are in close contact, this is an expression of strong affection and surrender.
