During the transvaginal scan, the sonographer places a vaginal transducer comfortably inside your vagina (after lubricating this with plenty of gel). Once the transducer is inside, sound waves bounce off the internal organs and transmit pictures of your pelvis (inside of it) onto a monitor.
How Early Pregnancy Ultrasound Works. In a transvaginal ultrasound, the doctor or technician inserts a thin probe into the vagina. During the ultrasound, they take a series of measurements, including the size of the gestational sac, the size of the yolk sac, the length of the fetal pole, and the heart rate.
What can I expect at an early scan?
You will normally be offering a transabdominal ultrasound first (over your stomach). Youll need to have a full bladder for this. So, drink half a litre of water before the appointment. Sometimes the doctor cant see your baby transabdominally at an early pregnancy scan.
When is the earliest scan for pregnancy?
An Early Pregnancy Scan (sometimes also called a Viability Scan or Dating Scan) provides reassurance in this very early stage of your pregnancy. A pregnancy can be seen on scan from as early as 6 weeks from the first day of your last period (LMP). We should be able to see a heartbeat from 6 weeks.
Is an early scan worth it?
Early reassurance scans are a fantastic way to confirm your gestation period and get a rough estimate of your babys due date. Providing that you are at least six weeks into the pregnancy, the sonographer will be able to take measurements of the baby, from the crown to the rump.
