Question: Is it OK to not ground a light switch?

Grounding light switches have become commonplace, used as a preventative safety measure. It is perfectly legal to wire a light switch without the inclusion of a ground. Dimmers will require a ground wire but traditional toggle-type switches will not. Omitting a ground wire on any switch is not recommended.

Can you hang a light without a ground wire?

Homes built prior to the 1960s did not require you to include a ground wire when installing electrical circuits. In fact, the ground wire is not necessary to complete the circuit; however, the ground wire acts as a safety net in the event of an electrical short.

Is it OK to not use a ground wire?

The appliance will operate normally without the ground wire because it is not a part of the conducting path which supplies electricity to the appliance. In the absence of the ground wire, shock hazard conditions will often not cause the breaker to trip unless the circuit has a ground fault interrupter in it.

What to do if there is no grounding wire?

If the electrical box is not metal, then simply tape the end of the light fixtures ground wire with electrical tape and let it float in the electrical box. Your only other alternative is to upgrade the wiring in the house, which will cost many thousands of dollars.

Do you have to ground a light switch in a plastic box?

Because they are plastic, there is no need to attach a ground wire to it. Since it is made of a non-conductive material, switches and outlets cannot short out if they touch the side of the box. Plastic boxes usually come with tapped screw holes for easy attachment of switches and outlets.

What if I have no ground wire?

If no ground wire or ground path is provided, it is improper and unsafe to install a grounding (3-prong) electrical receptacle on that circuit.

Can you ground a light switch to the box?

Your new light fixture will have a ground wire (green coated or bare copper). Adding a ground wire to the box isnt difficult; just connect a six-inch section of bare copper wire to the box by driving a No. 10-32 ground screw into a threaded hole in the box.

Do LED lights need to be grounded?
