When an autistic person is stressed?
When supporting somebody who is stressed, keep calm and quiet. Be a consistent, safe presence to help the person with autism feel they can begin to relax. Try to avoid showing that you are worried as this may make them feel less secure and more anxious. Give predictability and routine by writing things down.
What are autism triggers?
Among those with autism, common triggers include disturbing breaks in routine, lack of sleep, jarring “sensory stimuli” (noises, lights, or smells) or even undiagnosed mental health problems. Clearly, its important to look beyond the behavior itself to identify the underlying cause.
