Can you over tighten cranks?
Yes, it is possible I have seen square taper crank arms put on so tight that the only way to get them off was to cut the crank where it attached to the bottom bracket axle. The bigger problem with over tightening a square taper is that crank arm can be deformed to the point where it will not stay tight.
